Sara Jackson-Holman: Into The Blue

If only if only I coulda been yours
Been your rapport and yours to adore
If only if only I would've said yes
Forgotten the rest oh I could've said yes
If only if only you'd ask me again
I'd give you my hand
Let you take me
across the sand

Into the blue
And faded world of my daydreams
I feel I'm falling deeper everyday
Melting away down a dark and endless abyss
I'm grasping at straws and I'm chasing the wind
As I fall on my face over and over again

If only if only I had the luxury of retrospect
Sounds like you're speaking some sort of foreign dialect
If only something precious as time had a price
Instead of endlessly taking its toll on my soul
Oh so many if onlys running through my mind
What ifs and storybook endings time after time
If only if only you coulda been mine
I'd take you

Into the blue
And faded world of my daydreams
I feel I'm falling deeper everyday
Melting away down a dark and endless abyss
I'm grasping at straws and I'm chasing the wind
As I fall on my face over and over
Into the blue
And faded world of my daydreams
I feel I'm falling deeper everyday
Melting away down a dark and endless abyss
I'm grasping at straws and I'm chasing the world
As I fall on my face over and over again

Sara Jackson-Holman, a Portland Oregon native, was raised in the quiet town of Bend, Oregon. Her voice smoky and warm, she sings of the things that fill her head: dreams, the sea and sky and trees, belonging and loneliness and love, longing and forgetting and remembering.

Her songs are haunted by the unexpected fusion of the classically influenced piano, wistful strings, strange harmonies, and pop bent.

She released her debut album, When You Dream in May of 2010. She has since opened for Portland acts Blind Pilot and Horse Feathers, and played at MusicFestNW. Her song "Into the Blue" was on the season finale of ABC show Castle's season finale.

The moment her seven-year-old fingers touched the keys of her family's tired and old spinet piano, she fell in love with music. Her early inspirations included composers such as Chopin, Scarlatti, Beethoven, Soler, Schumann, and Bach, and their passion and ability to connect with their audience generation after generation. Performing at countless recitals and competitions, she became a fine classical pianist. From an early age, Jackson-Holman was also in love with reading, beautiful words, good literature, metaphors, and poetry. And ever since she could speak, she loved to sing. In the March of 2008, she began to reconcile her love of piano, poetry, singing, and pop music, and became fascinated with this medium of communication that so happily married her favorite passions.

My Personal Note
I discovered this song while going through all the previous episodes of the television show Castle. Being bitten by the bug, the romantic bug, I decided to systematically revisit the entire show by rewatching every single episode. I discovered in the process a number of well-placed songs which capture the mood of the moment and reflect this on again off again romantic cat and mouse game between the show's protagonists, Richard Castle and Kate Beckett.

In season 2, episode 24, A Deadly Game, the final scene of this season finale has Beckett realizing she shouldn't hesitate to tell Castle how she feels about him. In fact, these feelings are so strong, she dumps her boyfriend.

However, romance demands tension and tension we get. Just as Beckett is about to spill her guts, Castle's ex-wife shows up and we all discover Castle is going away with her, the ex-wife. What? Congrats to the actress Stana Katic for portraying Beckett's confusion, disappointment or sense of loss. Geesh, imagine you're at the point of declaring your feelings for somebody and they announce they're running off with somebody else?

Just as an aside, this makes for a sad season two finale but makes for a great season three opener.

Wicked: I'm Not That Girl

Published on Aug 29, 2009 by wickedthemusical08 (Here sung by Idina Menzel, original London cast)
YouTube: I'm Not That Girl - Wicked The Musical

Hands touch, eyes meet
Sudden silence, sudden heat
Hearts leap in a giddy whirl
He could be that boy
But I'm not that girl

Don't dream too far
Don't lose sight of who you are
Don't remember that rush of joy
He could be that boy
I'm not that girl

Ev'ry so often we long to steal
To the land of what-might-have-been
But that doesn't soften the ache we feel
When reality sets back in

Blithe smile, lithe limb
She who's winsome, she wins him
Gold hair with a gentle curl
That's the girl he chose
And Heaven knows
I'm not that girl

Don't wish, don't start
Wishing only wounds the heart
I wasn't born for the rose and the pearl
There's a girl I know
He loves her so
I'm not that girl

Wikipedia: I'm Not that Girl (song)
"I'm Not that Girl" is a song from the musical Wicked, composed by Stephen Schwartz, originally recorded by Idina Menzel on November 10, 2003, and released on December 16, 2003. It is a solo sung by the main character of the show, Elphaba (the Wicked Witch of the West).

Context in Wicked
The song is performed midway through the first act. During the song, Elphaba expresses her love for the Winkie prince Fiyero, the most popular boy at Shiz and Galinda's boyfriend. She accepts that she knows that nothing can ever happen between them, as she 'wasn't born for the rose and the pearl', and is an unpopular green girl. She also mentions that Fiyero has feelings for her, though this was unconfirmed. In act two Glinda reprised it about Elphaba when Fiyero leaves with her.

Wikipedia: Wicked (musical)
Wicked is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Winnie Holzman. It is based on the Gregory Maguire novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West (1995), a parallel novel of the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz and L. Frank Baum's classic story The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900). The musical is told from the perspective of the witches of the Land of Oz: Elphaba, the misunderstood girl with emerald-green skin, and Galinda, later Glinda, the beautiful, ambitious and popular blonde. Wicked tells the story in which these two unlikely friends grow to become the Wicked Witch of the West and the Good Witch of the North while struggling through opposing personalities and viewpoints, rivalry over the same love-interest, reactions to the Wizard's corrupt government, and, ultimately, Elphaba's public fall from grace. The plot begins before and continues after Dorothy's arrival from Kansas and includes references to locations, events, characters and situations from both the 1939 film and Baum's novel.

Personal Notes
I did see the musical years ago, but admittedly, had forgotten about it. I have an amusing story about how I re-discovered this song.

I've been rewatching various episodes of the television series Castle and have discovered I don't know how many videos created by fans of the series. Some are clips taken from the episodes, such as the famous kiss from season 3 episode 16 "Setup". Others are a collection of various romantic scenes between the show's protagonists set to music. One such music video (now taken down) introduced me to this song from the musical Wicked which serves as an excellent music track to the montage of clips showing the growing romance of Castle and Beckett. Will they or won't they get together? *slaps forehead* Oh my God, I've turned into a Castle junkie!

Lady Antebellum: Need You Now

Picture perfect memories scattered all around the floor
Reachin’ for the phone ‘cause I can’t fight it anymore
And I wonder if I ever cross your mind
For me it happens all the time

It’s a quarter after one
I’m all alone
And I need you now
Said I wouldn’t call
But I’ve lost all control
And I need you now
And I don’t know how I can do without
I just need you now

Another shot of whiskey, can’t stop looking at the door
Wishing you’d come sweeping in the way you did before
And I wonder if I ever cross your mind
For me it happens all the time

It’s a quarter after one
I’m a little drunk
And I need you now
Said I wouldn’t call
But I’ve lost all control
And I need you now
And I don’t know how I can do without
I just need you now

Yes I’d rather hurt than feel nothing at all

It’s a quarter after one
I’m all alone
And I need you now

And I said I wouldn’t call,
But I’m a little drunk
And I need you now

And I don’t know how I can do without
I just need you now

I just need you now

Oh baby I need you now

OneRepublic: Stop And Stare

This town is colder now, I think it's sick of us
It's time to make our move, I'm shaking off the rust
I've got my heart set on anywhere but here
I'm staring down myself, counting up the years
Steady hands, just take the wheel...
And every glance is killing me
Time to make one last appeal... for the life I lead

Stop and stare
I think I'm moving but I go nowhere
Yeah I know that everyone gets scared
But I've become what I can't be, oh
Stop and stare
You start to wonder why you're here not there
And you'd give anything to get what's fair
But fair ain't what you really need
Oh, can you see what I see

They're trying to come back, all my senses push
Untie the weight bags, I never thought I could...
Steady feet, don't fail me now
Imma run till you can't walk
Something pulls my focus out
And I'm standing down...

Stop and stare
I think I'm moving but I go nowhere
Yeah I know that everyone gets scared
But I've become what I can't be, oh
Stop and stare
You start to wonder why you're here not there
And you'd give anything to get what's fair
But fair ain't what you really need
Oh, you don't need

What you need, what you need...

Stop and stare
I think I'm moving but I go nowhere
Yeah I know that everyone gets scared
But I've become what I can't be
Oh, do you see what I see...

I have been rewatching various episodes of the television series Castle and have discovered a plethora (like that one?) of funny moments, romantic scenes and snippets of music I had not appreciated before. Geeze, I have become totally captivated by this show. Am I now (officially) a Castle junkie?

In season 1 episode 1 called "Flowers From Your Grave", we have the very first episode of the television series which introduced our cast of characters and the comedic and romantic interplay between crime novelist Richard Castle and New York Detective Kate Beckett. The end of the show has this sexually and romantically charged scene (click for clip) between Castle and Beckett that sets the viewer up for the rest of the series. Now tell me how you could in any way not tune in next week, the week after that, and now for the fourth year to see the build-up of one of the greatest (longest?) romances in primetime TV?

Golden State: Love Song

Here I go with another piece of music I discovered while rewatching the television series Castle. In season 2 episode 12 "A Rose for Everafter", Castle runs into a former girlfriend played by Alyssa Milano. Beckett may be jealous but it turns out there's nothing to worry about; Castle and former part friends. The final scene, though, has former leaving the precinct and saying to Beckett, "He's all yours now". This telling moment in this on-going cat and mouse between the two protagonists of the show is nicely accompanied by this song.

Information about this indie pop rock group from Los Angeles seems to be sparse. I note that there is no official music video for this song so it turns out this clip from Castle itself is the best video with the best sound.

While Golden State is comprised of four guys, the composer James Grundler explained that he felt the song sounded better with a female voice, here Holly Conlan. Personally, I think the song is good and works quite well for this scene from Castle. Hats off to the producers as they do a great job of selecting music to best fit the development of our multi-season love story.

By the way, I have to mention that the first few times I listened to this song, I couldn't help thinking that the opening part is very reminiscent`of the song "1 2 3 4" by Feist. Or is it just me?

The Daylights: I Hope This Gets To You

I’ve been searching, for a couple words
They could grow wings and fly like birds
Course i know it sounds absurd
But when you’re in love, all the lines get blurred

Do you remember, a thousand lights?
We danced like kids, as the traffic drove by
I can’t help I got you memorized
Imagined the world, it feels smaller tonight

And i hope, this
I hope this gets to you
To you
And I hope, this
I hope this gets to you

I knew I’d found what I was looking for
Sitting indian style, on the kitchen floor
You’re like pretty grace kelly in a black and white scene
And you’re batting your eyes cos you know it kills me
You think you feel my heart jumping through my chest?
When you look at me it beats three times as fast
And all of this is passing us too quick for regrets

(Oo oo oo oo)

And i hope, this
I hope this gets to you
To you
And I hope, this
I hope this gets to you
To you
And I hope, this
I hope this gets to you

I ran across this curiosity. Inspired by this song, an unknown gentleman has created a web page dedicated to the girl he loved and lost asking for a second chance. True love? Creepy? You decide.

In season 3 episode 9 called "Law & Murder", Castle pretends he has never seen the movie Forbidden Planet to trick Beckett into taking him to the movies, an unofficial date. This clip (Castle Beckett 3x19 "That's it, I'm taking you") shows the two of them getting on the elevator with this song playing in the background. It certainly captures the hope of something happening between us and the hope that message gets to you.

Bitter:Sweet: Get What I Want

Hold the door, while I let myself in
I'm tired boy, need a drink, need a man
I'm not looking for trouble, I just want someone to tease

Maybe if you're lucky, I'll show you what I've got
But let's get one thing straight dear
I get what I want

Here there boy, I am not like the rest
Let's have a dance, while our souls get undressed
I don't care much for small talk, there's no need to say a thing more
I can make you feel something lovely, that you've never felt before

Maybe if you're lucky, I'll show you what you've got
But let's get one thing straight dear
I get what I want

Darling don't step on my toes
Behave, I'm in control

I'm not the girl who will chase you
I don't need a Pepe Le Peu
But if it's a good time you're after, then there's plenty of things we can do

Maybe if you're lucky, I'll show you what I've got
But let's get one thing straight dear
I get what I want
I get what I want
I get what I want

In season 1 episode 9 called "Little Girl Lost", an old flame of Beckett's shows up and stirs the pot with Castle and Beckett. The clip (you're a mysterious woman - castle 1x09) shows the very end of the episode when Beckett announces she has a date but does not give any details. When Castle is intrigued by her reticence, she replies, "Maybe there's more of Nikki Heat in me than you think." This song by Bitter:Sweet is the fade out and perfectly captures the feeling of the moment.

Colbie Caillat: Fallin' For You

I don’t know but
I think I maybe
Fallin’ for you
Dropping so quickly
Maybe I should
Keep this to myself
Waiting ’til I
Know you better

I am trying
Not to tell you
But I want to do
I’m scared of what you’ll say
So I’m hiding what I’m feeling
But I’m tired of
Holding this inside my head

I’ve been spending all my time
Just thinking about ya
I don’t know what to do
I think I’m fallin’ for you
I’ve been waiting all my life
And now I found ya
I don’t know what to do
I think I’m fallin’ for you
I’m fallin’ for you

As I’m standing here
And you hold my hand
Pull me towards you
And we start to dance
All around us
I see nobody
Here in silence
It’s just you and me

I’m trying
Not to tell you
But I want to
I’m scared of what you’ll say
So I’m hiding what I’m feeling
But I’m tired of
Holding this inside my head

I’ve been spending all my time
Just thinking about ya
I don’t know what to do
I think I’m fallin’ for you
I’ve been waiting all my life
and now I found ya
I don’t know what to
I think I’m fallin’ for you
I’m fallin’ for you

Oh I just can’t take it
My heart is racing
The emotions keep spilling out

I’ve been spending all my time
Just thinking about ya
I don’t know what to
I think I’m fallin’ for you
I’ve been waiting all my life
and now I found ya
I don’t know what to
I think I’m fallin’ for you
I’m fallin’ for you
I think I’m fallin’ for you

I can’t stop thinking about it
I want you all around me
And now I just can’t hide it
I think I’m fallin’ for you (x2)

I’m fallin’ for you

Ooohhh
Oh no no
Oooooohhh
Oh I’m fallin’ for you

"Fallin' for You" is a song by American singer-songwriter Colbie Caillat. It was written by Caillat along with Rick Nowels, and produced by Nowels, John Shanks, and Caillat's father Ken Caillat, for her second studio album Breakthrough (2009). The song was released on June 29, 2009 as the lead single from the album, through Universal Republic. Musically, the song is a pop ballad, and the lyrics, according to Caillat, speak of people falling for a guy that they are friends with.

Music video
The video was released in July and is directed by The Malloys.
In the video, she goes to the beach with a man, played by Bobby Moynihan, who is not her type (as she says during a phone call in the beginning of the video), but she starts to like him more and more over the course of the outing. At the end of the video when she sings the lyrics "Oh, I'm fallin' for you." the man pops out of the trailer asking, "Seriously? You mean it?" and Caillat nods, indicating that she has fallen for him.

Amp Fiddler: If I Don't

'Cause everythin' [Incomprehensible]
You the one I've been dreamin' of
Baby, you've gone away
Say you'll never come back again
And I know that

If I don't think 'bout you
I'll be sad, yeah
If I don't stop thinkin' about you
I'll be mad
If I don't not think about you
I'll be glad

'Cause if I don't think about you
Everythin' all around is kinda blue
And girl, you know
Our life is gonna change

And if you leave, leave alone
I will never call you up again
And deep inside you know that

If I don't think 'bout you
I'll be sad, yeah
If I don't stop thinkin' 'bout you
I'll be mad, yeah
If I don't not think 'bout you
I'll be glad, yeah

You'll be out of my life
Baby, we are in love

And if I don't think 'bout you
I'll be sad, oh
If I don't think 'bout you
I'll be glad

If I don't stop thinkin' 'bout you
I'll lose my mind
'Cause baby, you leave me out of sight
And I'll be away from your life, movin' on

'Cause if I don't stop thinkin' about you
I'll be sad, oh
If I don't stop thinkin' 'bout you
If I don't not think about you
I'll be sad

If I don't

Geeze, I have become totally captivated by this show. Am I now (officially) a Castle junkie?

In season 1 episode 4 called "Hell Hath No Fury", we end with an amusing confrontation between Castle and Beckett when she discovers the name of the character Castle is basing on Beckett is "Nikki Heat". The clip (Castle - The Naming of Nikki Heat, "It's a stripper name!") ends with a brief excerpt from a piece of music that I hunted down by Googling the lyrics. While I thought the song was well placed in the show, I had no idea I would find out just how terrific the original is and what an extraordinarily original video goes along with it. Wow, this is really, really good.
