Handy Facts About Male Masturbation

Postscript: Some serious s**t
In my posting "May is National Masturbation Month", I talk about how this practice has been vilified from here to tomorrow in our current Puritanical culture.

Minnie Joycelyn Elders was the first African American and second woman to hold the position of Surgeon General of the United States, being appointed by President Bill Clinton in 1993. (Wikipedia: Joycelyn Elders: Career and Tenure as U.S. Surgeon General) Like many of the surgeons general before her, she was an outspoken advocate of a variety of health-related causes. She argued for an exploration of the possibility of drug legalization and backed the distribution of contraceptives in schools.

In 1994, she was invited to speak at a United Nations conference on AIDS. She was asked whether it would be appropriate to promote masturbation as a means of preventing young people from engaging in riskier forms of sexual activity, and she replied, "I think that it is part of human sexuality, and perhaps it should be taught." This remark caused great controversy and resulted in Elders losing the support of the White House. ... Elders was fired by President Clinton as a result of the controversy in December 1994.

In my posting "Planned Parenthood: addicting children to sex!!!", I talk about the American Life League (ALL) one of the largest pro-life organizations in the United States and how it is attempting to shut down Planned Parenthood as a supplier of abortions. In an odd but amusing video, ALL, which seems to believe in abstinence only sex education, claims Planned Parenthood is promoting sexual activity and compares it to a neighborhood pusher who uses masturbation is its "gateway drug" to get kids hooked on sex. This is pretty crazy. Ya got to see it.

So, just how dangerous is all this sexual activity?

Wikipedia: Masturbation: Health and psychological effects
Scientific consensus: The medical consensus is that masturbation is a medically healthy and psychologically normal habit.

Talk Sex with Sue Johanson: Male Masturbation
The general acceptance that masturbation is normal, natural and healthy, and that both males AND females can do it very well….thank you.

Talk Sex with Sue Johanson: Female Masturbation
The big secret is to accept the fact that this is an o.k. thing to do. In fact, it is therapeutic, especially if she has never reached orgasm. Most females have their first orgasm all by themselves. Once she has learned what works for her, then she can share that information with her partner who can incorporate the moves into their sex play. Guys tell us what they like, why can't we tell them what works for us?

Sex Addiction
Back in 2011, many people were talking about the film Shame as a depiction of "sex addiction". (my blog: Movie Review: Shame) I saw the movie and thought it was anything but.

Wikipedia: Compulsive masturbation (hypersexuality or sex addiction)
There is no scientific evidence of a causative relationship between masturbation and any form of mental disorder. Excessive or compulsive sexual behavior is generally understood to be a symptom rather than a cause. [my bold]

Masturbation among adolescents contributes to them developing a sense of mastery over sexual impulses, and it has a role in the physical and emotional development of prepubescents and pubescents. Babies and toddlers will play with their genitals in much the same way as they play with their ears or toes. If such play becomes all-consuming, it may be necessary to look for an underlying cause of this, such as the child being tense and in need of comfort, or that others may be overreacting and thus reinforcing the habit. It could be caused by a low-grade urinary tract or yeast infection, or the child may be overstimulated and in need of soothing, or indeed understimulated and bored. In each case, dealing with the cause will bring the behavior back to a level of enthusiasm that does not take away from other interests. Such a habit can also be addressed by distraction and providing other activities for the child to engage with. Alongside many other factors, such as medical evidence, age-inappropriate sexual knowledge, sexualized play or aggression, and precocious or seductive behavior, excessive masturbation may alternatively be an indicator of sexual abuse.

Compulsive masturbation and other compulsive behaviors can be signs of an emotional problem, which may need to be addressed by a mental health specialist. As with any "nervous habit", it is more helpful to consider the causes of compulsive behavior, rather than try to repress masturbation.

There is discussion between professionals and other interested parties as to whether such a thing as sexual addiction really exists. [my bold] Compulsive masturbation is regarded as one of the symptoms of sexual addiction by proponents of that concept.

Wikipedia: Dr. Marty Klein
Dr. Marty Klein is an American sex therapist, educator and public policy analyst. Klein is critical of censorship, the concepts of "sex addiction" and "porn addiction," and the anti-pornography movement.

I would highly recommend anybody to explore Dr. Klein's writings. He is a thoughtful, unbiased social scientist. He is sex-positive, but he also seeks the truth.

Why “Sexual Addiction” Is Not A Useful Diagnosis — And Why It Matters by Dr. Marty Klein
If convicted mass murderer Ted Bundy had said that watching Bill Cosby reruns motivated his awful crimes, he would have been dismissed as a deranged sociopath. Instead, Bundy has said his pornography addiction made him do it–which many people treated as the conclusion of a thoughtful social scientist. Why?
...
WHY IS THE SEXUAL ADDICTION CONCEPT SO POPULAR?
It distances personal responsibility for sexual choices.

...
WHY DO SO MANY PEOPLE CLAIM TO GET RELIEF FROM SEXUAL ADDICTION PROGRAMS?
First, we should keep in mind that simply because people claim that something gives them emotional relief doesn’t mean it works in the way they claim. Astrology apparently helped reduce Nancy Reagan’s anxiety about husband Ron’s career, but that doesn’t mean it actually helped either of them make better decisions.

...
SUMMARY
The concept of “sex addiction” really rests on the assumption that sex is dangerous. There’s the sense that we frail humans are vulnerable to the Devil’s temptations of pornography, masturbation, and extramarital affairs, and that if we yield, we become “addicted.” Without question, being a sexual person is complex, and we are vulnerable–to our sex-negative heritage, shame about our bodies, and conflict about the exciting sexual feelings we can’t express without risking rejection. Sexuality per se, however, is not dangerous–no matter how angry or frightened people are.
