Be Dazzling With Vajazzling

Va-what? And what does Jennifer Love Hewitt have to do with this? Yeah, yeah, I can hear you saying that I'm sooooo behind the times. After all, the word hit the mainstream at the beginning of 2010 and here I am finally getting around to saying something about it.

First of all, just what is it? The word "vajazzle", according to Wiktionary, is a blend of vagina and bedazzle and as a verb means to decorate the vulva or pubic area with jewels. If, like me, you have never heard of this, I'm sure your reaction is going to be one of surprise, "What!?!"

Okay, now that you know the "what", let's get to the "how". It seems that you start with a Brazilian wax. Unlike other waxings which remove whatever hair may be left exposed by the quantity or lack thereof of material in a bathing suit or bathing thong, the objective of the "Brazilian wax" is the removal of all hair front and back. - Just a sec. I have to think about that one. [look at ceiling with an expression of concentration] "Ouch!" - There are variations which include leaving a "landing strip", that is, a vertical strip in front, but for vajazzling complete removal seems to be the order of the day.

To add a FYI here, Wikipedia's article on Bikini waxing which is about female waxing does lead me to "Male genital waxing". The article explains that male waxing is popular in the body building and male modeling community. I do remember many years ago that the Olympic swimmer Mark Spitz made headlines when he said he removed all hair from his body claiming he swam faster. At that time, I had no idea at all that men removed body hair. Yes, I had a sheltered childhood.

The vajazzle itself entails a stick-on pattern of crystals that is applied to the skin. I suppose that skin could be anywhere but here, we're talking about the pubic region above the vagina. Apparently there are dozens of pattern options and supposedly the results are quite artistic. I also see that you do not have to go to a salon; there are home kits available.

Cindy Barshop
There seem to be two points of significance about this 46 year old woman. First of all, she's joining the cast of "Real Housewives of New York" for season number four. Secondly, Cindy Barshop is the owner of Completely Bare hair-removal spas and beauty products and she is credited (People Magazine) with inventing the "vajewel". She is now offering the "vatoo", a temporary airbrush design also for "down there".

Jennifer Love Hewett
This American actress seems to have been the one who brought vajazzling to the public's attention. On January 12, 2010, she was a guest on the George Lopez show. She started out talking about her book "The Day I Shot Cupid" in which she gives advice on relationships and reveals that one chapter dealt with a method she used to deal with the break-up. At this point, she explains to Mr. Lopez, "After a breakup, a friend of mine Swarovski-crystalled my, um, precious lady. And, um, it shined like a disco ball. So I have a whole chapter in there about how women should vajazzle their vajayjays." At this point in the video clip, there is a lot of clapping and screaming from the audience and a somewhat taken aback George gets down on his knees before Hewett to kiss her hands.

Final Word
My research hasn't turned up whether or not the addition of gems to one's nether regions may extent to the male sex. Too bad. As with "Be dazzling with vajazzling", I was all set with "Bejewel your tool". Hmmm, too crude?

I note that some articles and videos keep saying "decorate your vagina". Ah, I think that is an extremely loose meaning of the word. Do people not know anything other than P or C to describe a woman's private parts? Hel-lo! What happened to the terms pudendum, vulva, or pubic mound?

Years ago, a lady friend offered me a very special Valentine on February 14. It was, ah, shaved in the shape of a heart. It was sexy, amusing, and quite an intimate expression of her feelings for our relationship. That particular relationship didn't turn out to be "the one", but I never forgot her Valentine. I would add that while all of us may feel hesitant about this sort of thing, thinking it may be silly or just plain stupid, these sorts of gestures can contribute to the shared intimacy of a relationship. I have to admit, from personal experience, that sometimes a little silliness is just what the doctor ordered. It's fun to have fun and it's a lot of fun to share it.

...
While promoting the book during a January 2010 interview on Lopez Tonight, Hewitt said that there is a chapter in it about "vajazzling" (decorating a woman's vulva with Swarovski crystals). She said it looked "cute", revealed that she was currently vajazzled with "hot pink" crystals and recommended to all women that they should also try it and see how it can raise their confidence. This became a big internet hit with the video going viral, widespread news coverage and the term "vajazzling" becoming one of the most searched terms on Google the next day.
